Women Are Unbeatable

An initiative as part of the United Nations’ Orange Days campaign against violence towards women and girls.

Living together without domestic violence makes everyone happier. For this reason, nine organizations have joined forces in the “Women Are Unbeatable” working group. Together, they support the United Nations’ Orange Days campaign. The lakeside candlelight chain raises awareness of gender-based violence and commemorates the victims of domestic violence. The workshop for Strong Mothers – Strong Daughters shows women and girls how to assert themselves and defend themselves more effectively.

Domestic Violence – Also a Problem in Switzerland

The term “domestic violence” includes all forms of physical, psychological, sexual, and economic violence. It usually takes place within the family. Domestic violence is also a major problem in Switzerland: on average, 25 people die each year as a result of domestic violence. The majority of those killed are women. Violence means: You are physically harmed. You are threatened. You are forced into sexual acts. You are insulted or verbally abused. When this happens at home or within a relationship, it is referred to as domestic violence.

16 Days Against Violence

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It commemorates the murder of the three sisters Minerva, Patria, and María Teresa Mirabal. They were persecuted and tortured for months by the Dominican secret police before being brutally murdered on November 25, 1960. Since 1999, this day has been officially recognized by the United Nations and marks the beginning of the Orange Days campaign. The “16 Days Against Violence” continue until December 10, International Human Rights Day.

The “Women Are Unbeatable” initiative was launched in 2018 by FrauenKirche Zentralschweiz (now fra-z) in the Canton of Zug. Together with other organizations, the founders wanted to make the Orange Days visible and meaningful in the Canton of Zug and contribute to violence prevention. Today, “Women Are Unbeatable” is supported by nine organizations in the Canton of Zug. The lakeside candlelight chain takes place every year on the first Sunday during the Orange Days campaign.
